Get Local Live Weather On Your Computer With WeatherBug

February 28, 2009 | In: Computers, Freeware, Internet

image A phrase very much heard in New England is if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute, it will change.  How true that can be.  Yesterday it was over 50 degrees, today will be in the 30s and tomorrow snow.  From one hour to another the weather can change and it is nice to have access to an application that runs on my computer called WeatherBug that keeps me updated with live, local weather.

There are two versions of the application, a free ad-supported version and a yearly subscription version.  Here I am going to talk about the free version.  Also, you can have the application sit in your system tray or add it as a gadget on either you Google Sidebar or Windows Sidebar (if you are running Windows Vista).  There is also a widget for Mac OS X users.  In order to receive live weather you need an active internet connection.

Windows Version

First,  go to this page, WeatherBug Installation and click on the Free Download link.  There are directions on how to download it using Internet Explorer though you can download it with Firefox as I did.  After installation you will be asked for you will be asked for your zip code which will give you local weather, not weather from the nearest city as other applications do.

An icon will show up in your system tray with the current temperature. (I wish it were 78 degrees out!)

image When you want to see more detailed weather click on the icon and a window will pop up with current conditions.

imageAlong with Current Conditions you also get

  • Forecast – gives you 7 day, hourly, weekend and forecast maps.
  • Radar and Maps – great for tracking storm systems, doppler maps, ability to animate to see movement of weather.
  • Severe Weather – this shows any severe weather alerts.  Also the icon in your system tray will flash alerting you to severe weather alerts.
  • Live Cameras – shows camera shots from local weather spots.
  • Weather News – Any useful weather news for the United States.
  • Travel Weather – click on a city to see local conditons and forecasts.
  • Outdoor Health – includes air quality, uv index and allergies.

Sidebar Gadgets

If you use the Windows Sidebar or Google Sidebar then you can add a gadget that looks like this.

You can click through the different options at the bottom of the widget and for more detailed information you will be brought to the WeatherBug page for your local area.

Simply use the gadget searchbar to look for Weatherbug.

Mac OS X

Mac OS X users aren’t out of luck either.  There is a widget that can be added to your dashboard.

image Go to WeatherBug® Mac Widget for Mac OS X DashBoard and follow the directions to add it to your dashboard.

Conclusion

I run the Weatherbug application on my desktop computer.  For a time I didn’t on my laptop because older versions slowed my startup time.  It seems the newer version of Weatherbug doesn’t cause me any problems so I have switched from using the widget back to using the application.

Do you use Weatherbug?  What are your thoughts?  Is there another weather application you use that you would like to share your thoughts?
