At Home With Ellen: Electronics
February 15, 2009 | In: Electronics
I love gadgets and new technology and my home is filled with a variety of items I have collected over the past few of years. If I had the money I would recycle older items (anything more than a year old in the technology world) and buy newer items. Unfortunately that is not a possibility at this point in time but it doesn’t stop me from lusting after the newest items that come on the market.
Anyway, I thought I would share with you the electronics I currently use to give you a better idea of who I am.
Computers, etc.
- Dell Dimension 5150: My desktop computer is about 3 years old and is showing its age. I have already reformatted it once to speed it up. I have 2 19” computer monitors and love how much easier it is to do my work.
Dell XPS M1530: I bought this laptop computer about 6 months ago after seeing my Dad with his. I love this laptop. The keyboard is awesome. It has Windows Vista on it but I will upgrade to Windows 7 once it comes out in a stable beta release.- Canon MX700 Multifunction Printer: This is a great printer/scanner/copier/fax machine. It has both top and bottom loading paper trays so I never run out of paper. I use the scanner quite a bit and have no complaints. It also is network ready though at present it is shared through my desktop computer because my router is in a different part of the house.
- Additional Info: My computers are networked with a Linksys wireless G router. I have a Maxtor Shared Storage Network drive so I can access all my photos, videos and documents on both my desktop and laptop computer.
Televisions, etc.
Samsung LN46A550: This 46” LCD 1080P TV is a must for watching high definition tv shows and blu-ray movies. I hope that some television stations will upgrade their output to 1080P because it really makes a difference on a tv this size. I have this television in my greatroom hooked up to a Sony Playstation 3 and Yamaha sound system.- Sony Bravia 40” 1080P . For the bedroom I was passed down my dad’s LCD television (not too shappy) and I hooked it up to home theater in-a-box set up from Sony as well. I have a Philips Divx DVD player which allows me to burn content from my computer and play it directly on the television. Eventually I want to get a blu-ray player since the Sony is 1080P which is optimal for blu-ray.
- Sony KV-30HS420: In my living room I have an older Sony 30” high definition ready tube television which is nice for regular television viewing – no sound system and size precludes me from watching television shows like Lost and Battlestar Galactica. I must sound spoiled!
- Motorola DVR: I am a Comcast Cable subscriber and all televisions have high definition boxes with DVRs (digital video recorders). That way I don’t ever miss a television show and I record different shows on different televisions. I bet you can’t tell I like television and movies!
- Logitec Harmony 680 Remote Control: For each television I have a Logitec Harmony 680 all-in-one remote control. The Harmony line of remotes are easy to program and use. You only need one hand to control the remote which is a must – none of those big panel remotes that bind you to using 2 hands.
Other Items
- Sony DCR SR200 Handycam: I like to take video from time to time and this 40gb hard drive handycam really does the trick. I need to get out more and take video of my surroundings. I have lots and lots of video of my cat and family holidays. I also want to start doing a video oral history with my Dad to give to my family.
- iPod Touch: I love my touch. It is great for my music library, holding 8gb of music, video, photos, data and applications. It’s a 1st generation that I bought over a year ago. I listen to audiobooks and it’s a great device for that as well as browsing the web and playing games. It’s an all around entertainment piece.
Samsung Omnia: This is my newest gadget replacing my regular old cellphone. It’s a Windows Mobile smart phone offered through Verizon Wireless. I would have gotten an iPhone except that I won’t change back to AT&T because of service issues in the past. Not only can I make and receive phone calls but I can browse the web either over a wireless network or Verizon’s EVDO network. I’ve been pimping my phone to look and work the way I want it to and will share more about that in upcoming posts.
And, just so you know I have a pretty good home alarm system to protect all my treasures
I always want the latest and greatest. I’m looking at the new line of Samsung televisions that are coming out with built in widgets to show information from the web on the tv. I also would love to add an Apple Mac when I replace my Dell desktop.
Are you a gadget junkie like me? What kind of electronics do you collect?

Development of digital technologies occurs prompt rates. Does not lag behind progress and digital TV. Speaking about digital TV, we first of all mean satellite TV. The digital satellite TV becomes more and more accessible to simple users. The market paid satellite tv also is not necessary on a place. The new digital standard of TV of high clearness HDTV actively develops and takes root. The satellite TV becomes more and more directed on the spectator. Besides digital quality of the image, advantage of satellite systems also is also the extensive cover zone of the companion.
